Making a Spare Key for Jeep Commander yourself

One great thing about Jeep Commander is that you can easily make a duplicate key yourself. However, before you can be able to do this, you will need to have two working keys for security reasons. Most people only have one key to drive their cars around; we recommend that you always have two working keys at home. You can keep one at a safe place while you drive around with the other one, the reason for this is that keys get worn out over time and when this happens, the keys will stop turning your ignition or even break.

In most cases, before your key breaks or worn out, it will give you some visible indications or it will just start to become harder and harder to use on the ignition unlike before. You can make a brand new third key before your key stops working altogether but you can only do this if you have two working keys.

The first thing you need to do is to buy a new Jeep Commander key. The keys you will buy must be a transponder chip key which you can easily get On-line, from a locksmith company or through a Jeep dealership.

When you get your new key, choose the key that is in the best working condition from your two keys you already have. After that, you can easily copy your old key to the new key you've just bought. You can cut keys online go to a locksmith store, Jeep dealership or Ace Hardware to have your new key copied. After you've done this, take all the 3 keys (both the new one and old keys) to your jeep and follow the instructions below:

• You must first insert one of your old working keys into your ignition switch and then carefully turn the key to "ON" position. Keep an eye on your watch and ensure you turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position in less than 15 seconds and then remove the key.
• Next step is to insert the other old working key into your Jeep ignition and then turn it to the "ON" position. You will hear a "ding" sound after about 10 seconds and the theft security light will begin to flash. Turn the key to the "OFF" position in less than 15 seconds and remove the key.
• When you are done with your two old working keys, the next step is to insert the new key you just copied into your Jeep Commander Ignition switch and turn it to the "ON" position just like you did with the two old working keys. Again, you will hear a "ding" sound after just 10 seconds and the security theft light will stop flashing. Return the ignition switch to the "OFF" position and then turn it back "ON" for another three seconds.
• You are almost done, what you need to do now is just turn the ignition back OFF and remove the new key from the ignition. Now your new key has been programmed.
• You can repeat this process up to eight times, for eight keys.
